How Did Crime Start?Although most get the impression of a nice, prosperous time when they think of the "Roaring 20's", it was really a time of trouble and crime. Arrests increased by 102%, which led to a prison populations increase of 366%. Yeah, roaring alright. It all started because of the 18th Amendment (Prohibition). People started bootlegging alcohol and selling it for a profit. Naturally, people in the same community or from the same country started working together for protection and to increase profits. The different gangs then started to eliminate each other so they could get more money for themselves. That was the start of gang verses gang violence. And from there, as you probably guessed, it escalated. Gangs got bigger, got better weapons, and started to rack up the money. Gangs staged "hits", in which they tried to eliminate rival gang leaders or members. Leaders of these "super-gangs" (Mafia, Triad, etc.) became known as Crime Bosses, and became infamous throughout America. You probably know one of these bosses: Al Capone. And crime continued evolving from there...
